Mobile number series in India
Update (4/9/2009): The updated MSC Codes list list (January 2009) is here: http://coai.in/docs/MSC%20CODES%20Jan.09.xls. A cached copy is available here. Thanks to Jogi for the info!
Original post (11/13/2005): I got a missed call from a mobile/cell number from India and I was trying to figure out where the call originated. I searched a bit online but could not find any comprehensive list initially. Finally, I came across this list and it is pretty comprehensive. I thought someone else might find it useful and so decided to post the link here.

Where night meets day
Got this photograph from one of my friends. It is absolutely stunning and so I thought I should share it with all of you out there. The best thing I like about the photograph is that the earth looks so serene.
Note: The text below the photograph says that the photo was taken during the last mission of the Columbia. But it seems that this is not true. Nevertheless, the photograph is awesome and definitely worth a look.
This photo is absolutely beautiful. Be sure to read the text below to have a better understanding of what you are viewing. It is historic too as this is the last mission for Columbia…
The photograph was taken by the crew on board the Columbia during its last mission, on a cloudless day. The picture is of Europe and Africa when the sun is setting. Half of the picture is in night. The bright dots you see are the cities’ lights.
The top part of Africa is the Sahara Desert.
Note that the lights are already on in Holland, Paris, and Barcelona, and that’s it’s still daylight in Dublin, London, Lisbon, and Madrid.
The sun is still shining on the Strait of Gibraltar. The Mediterranean Sea is already in darkness.
In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean you can see the Azores Islands; below them to the right are the Madeira Islands; a bit below are the Canary Islands; and further South, close to the farthest western point of Africa , are the Cape Verde Islands.
Note that the Sahara is huge and can be seen clearly both during day time and night time.
To the left, on top, is Greenland, totally frozen.

Original Post (August 16, 2005):
Came across Aamir Khan’s blog! The blog is essentially about his new film “Mangal Pandey“. There are only four posts till now (July 16(2), August 8 and August 15) but there are lots and lots of comments (713 comments for the first three posts i.e. an average of 238 comments per post). The nice thing about his blog is that he posts personal responses to selected user comments/emails. Note (Oct 15, 2007): Aamir no longer uses this blog. This blog has posts from July 16, 2005 to Aug 16, 2005.
Aamir is my favourite Indian movie actor. He is a brilliant actor, probably one of the very best in Indian cinema. His movie “Dil Chahta Hai” is one my two most favourite Hindi movies (The other one is “DDLJ“).
Also, saw from the photos that Aamir uses an IBM Thinkpad. IBM Thinkpads are supposed to be the best laptops. They work great but the cost is higher when compared to others like Dell. However, Looks wise, I feel Thinkpads are not that great. Instead, I prefer Sony Vaio.

3 years
Time flies. I never realized. A lot of things have happened since then (8/8/2002); some for better, some for worse.
Today is also the start of a new phase in my life. It is going to be very busy for the next one and half years. I hope it will be worth the effort. Time will tell.
p.s. This message is cryptic on purpose 🙂
Windows Vista
The next version of Microsoft Windows finally has an official name: Windows Vista. The name debuted yesterday at a Microsoft sales conference in Atlanta. The name was officially announced today on the Microsoft website. Windows Vista’s code-name was Longhorn.
The advertising tagline for Windows Vista is: “Clear, Confident, Connected: Bringing clarity to your world”. According to Microsoft, the XP in Windows XP stands for “experience”. Windows XP’s code-name was Whistler. Don’t know yet the reason behind the new name.
The beta version will be released on August 3, 2005.

Laptop arrived today
My Dell Inspiron 600M laptop arrived today at 5:30 pm. I had bought it exactly 7 days back. I was expecting it sooner but there was a weekend in between. So, it got delayed by 2 days.
Everything is working great. I set it up for my University wireless network and it is able to access the network. In 2002, our Univ wireless network was 802.11b (11 Mbps) but now it has been upgraded to 802.11g (54 Mbps). The in-built wireless card in the 600m is also 802.11g compatible. So, the access speed is really good.
Also tested out the bluetooth connection and I am able to transfer pictures and files from my cellphone. I will be able to take more photos with my cellphone from now on :).
Everything is working great and I am really satisfied with my laptop :).
Google Moon and the Copernicus Initiative
Just chanced upon a blog post about Google Moon. Google Moon is a Google Map version of the moon and shows imagery on the Moon’s surface. It was created in honor of the first manned Moon landing, which took place on July 20, 1969. It uses NASA imagery and so the zoom level is limited (By the way, try zooming in too close and see what happens 🙂 ).
Also, in 2069, Google will fully integrate Google Local search capabilities into Google Moon and will open a research and technology center on the Moon! This project is called the Copernicus Initiative (also called GCHEESE, acronym for “Google Copernicus Hosting Environment and Experiment in Search Engineering”). A very ambitious project indeed.
Also, note the last paragraph on the Lunar Jobs page :).
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age by April 1, 2007 and have proof of earth residency. Google is an equal opportunity employer.

Dell Inspiron 600M
Just bought an Inspiron 600M laptop! Dell has a great deal which comes once every 2 or 3 weeks where you configure an Inspiron laptop upto $1500 and then get $750 off! So, basically you get a top-end Inspiron laptop for only $750. Mine was a bit more than $750 because I added some more extras. I did like the Inspiron 700M. It looks and works great but the screen is too small. I would have loved to buy the Latitude X1 but it is way beyond my budget.
The configuration is given below:
Laptop Model: Inspiron 600 M
Processor: Pentium M (Centrino) 725(1.60 GHz/400MHz FSB)
Screen Size: 14.1-in XGA
RAM: 1 GB DDR SDRAM
Hard Drive: 60 GB
DVD Burner: 8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW)
Wireless Card: Internal (Intel PRO/Wireless 2200) (802.11 b/g, 54Mbps)
Bluetooth Card: Internal (Dell TrueMobile 300)
